Over the past 35 years, Andrew Smith & Son have developed into one of the South's principal Independent Professional Fine Art Auctioneers. Our origins as a professional family run firm of auctioneers dates back to 1793 with the original George Smith & Son, located in Winchester High Street.
We hold two different types of auction - Fine Art, Antique & Decorative Interiors, offering Asian Art, silver and plate, jewellery and watches, ceramics and glass, pictures, furniture, clocks, rugs and carpets, and a wide range of collectables. We also hold regular Saturday Homes & Antiques Auctions.
We have a team of highly skilled specialist valuers with considerable experience in the antiques/auction trade to value and catalogue jewellery and silver, books, watches and Asian art, etc. We have discovered many valuable items over the years with record prices being achieved in many cases.
Meet the team
Catherine Hockley ASFAV
Managing Director Catherine joined the company in 2006. With a degree in Fine Art Valuation and over 30 years’ experience in the art and auction world, she previously worked at Christie’s London and was the Assistant Editor of Apollo Magazine. Catherine can advise on all aspects of the auction process and is our fine art and jewellery expert. When not at work Catherine enjoys going to the gym and walking her Lakeland Terrier Hector.
Gary Loftus ASFAV
Gary joined Andrew Smith & Son in 2001. Gary undertakes the majority of our formal valuations for Insurance and Inheritance Tax purposes. Having worked for many years in the specialist antique Persian carpet trade, followed by an arts degree as a mature student, Gary’s particular fields of interest are carpets, furniture and militaria. Outside of work, Gary’s two daughters and Moomin the cockerpoo ensure he is always busy.
Associate Director/Asian Art Valuer
Having joined Andrew Smith & Son in 2008 as a porter, Adam was promoted to Saleroom Manager in 2011 and again to Associate Director in 2021. Adam specialises in Asian Art, and catalogues our popular Homes and Antiques auctions, and is one of our team of auctioneers. Adam is a dedicated runner and sports enthusiast.
Nick Jarrett FRICS
With a career spanning over 40 years in the auction industry, Nick is a well-known and respected professionally qualified auctioneer and valuer, who works with us on a consultancy basis. Nick catalogues our silver, ceramics and collectables, is our senior auctioneer, and has made our monthly ‘free’ valuation days held at our Winchester city centre premises, a notable success. Nick is a keen angler in his spare time.
In the Office
Pippa joined us in 2017 and efficiently deals with the multitude of daily enquiries we receive. As the first point of call, she ensures the smooth running of the administrative process, in addition to running our busy diaries. With a customer service background honed in financial services, Pippa is calm and unflappable, a skill no doubt learned in her busy teenage household. A sewing and crafting fan, she is never happier than when she has a project on the go.
Heading our finance department, Natalie has been with us since 2016, and keeps track of our comprehensive financial requirements, adhering to strict regulations and compliance. Natalie assists with online bidding on sale days. A numerical wizard, Natalie has been known to admit loving maths! Natalie is an avid reader and puzzle lover.
In the Saleroom
Olly joined us as a porter in 2017 and was later promoted to Saleroom Manager. Olly is responsible for keeping track of and storing all the many items that are consigned for auction and organising the collection of goods and laying out of sales. Olly is also part of our auctioneering team. An enthusiastic sports fan, Olly also enjoys good food and wine.
Andy is the longest serving member of our portering team and has been with the company since 2007. Assisting in the collection and consignment of goods for our auctions, Andy also assists with condition reports and front of house duties. Andy is assisted at peak times by our team of regular part-time porters/viewing staff. Andy has recently adopted a rescue dog Stella and is an avid music fan.
Dave joined us as a porter in 2014, and his artistic flair quickly found an outlet in the photography required for each auction. Alongside his portering duties, Dave is kept busy taking and editing the thousands of images produced each year. Dave is a talented graphic artist and self-taught musician.
Becca is the latest addition to the Andrew Smith & Son team. With a degree in Photography from the University of Brighton, Becca shares the responsibility of all our image production with Dave, alongside her portering duties. Becca’s previous experience is in a retail environment. Becca is a keen collector and animal lover and has recently joined a local football team.
Hector is the office veteran and mostly spends his time asleep. The dog that the others look up to, he is punctual and understands his routine, and knows which clients bring biscuits for him. His favourite past times are sleeping on the back of the sofa, and watching the world go by. His world is governed by treats.
Monty is a free-roaming dog and is often to be found asleep on a chair in the saleroom. He particularly enjoys sale days where he can be found close-by anyone with food. He is slowing down a little now, and ageing in a most distinguished manner.
Moomin is the office darling and enjoys a cuddle in the afternoons. She is as quick as a snake in the grass and escapes through the office door on a regular basis. She is a proficient treat-catcher.
The youngest of the canine team, Ted is quickly learning the office ropes. He has a tendency to bark at clients but it is not out of malice, he is simply defending his office. He particularly enjoys sleeping under his desk and chasing Moomin.
Stella is the most travelled dog in the office, and emigrated from Greece to England over a year ago. While it took a while for her to settle in her new home, she has come on in leaps and bounds. Stella excels at jumping and feels happiest in Saleroom 2 away from the other dogs.
