Fees

An 18th century Chinese celadon jar and cover, Yueyaer guan (月牙耳罐) with gilt metal mounts, the tapering ovoid body featuring low relief crescent moon mock handles covered in an even sea-green glaze, the recessed base with Qianlong six character seal mark in underglaze blue and of the period (1736-95) Qing dynasty, 28 cm high o/a

Provenance: From a local private collection, family owned for two generations thence by descent

Internal mid-height star crack to the body, originates from the interior but possibly extends through to back of the glaze as it becomes visible from the exterior under transmitted/back lighting, some external linear stress glaze splits with black inclusions and other black flecks, some other light superficial surface wear, the cover is in good condition matching the jar in glaze tone, the metal rim-mount securely fixed, finial not independently attached just with four chains one of which is no longer connected to the rim, metal mounts showing natural aged patina and expected rubbing to the gilding in high-relief areas

This type of lidded jar was produced in different sizes in the Qing dynasty, from the Kangxi reign until the end of the Daoquang reign, used in the Qing palace to store various types of tea leaves. A very similar example of this type from the Qing court collection is in the National Palace Museum, Taipai, no.11265
