Andrew Smith FRICS

Andrew, or ‘Andy’ is our senior Auctioneer and one of our Fine Art Valuers. He is based in our Winchester office and also runs the professional department, specialising in building surveying & architectural projects. Andy is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and with over 35 years experience is a highly competent Auctioneer, unfazed but bemused by the rise in internet bidders partaking in our ‘live’ auctions.

Janice Smith MRICS

Janice is our Managing Director and is a professional member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. In addition to the busy role of overall saleroom controller, she heads up our team of ceramics & glass valuers, undertaking verbal, written and home valuations. Janice also ensures the administrative process rums smoothly.

Gary Loftus ASOFAA

Gary joined Andrew Smith and Son in 2001. Overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day running of the saleroom, with a particular emphasis on marketing. Gary also shares the workload of valuations and home visits, advising auction procedure and catalogues various sections of each sale. Having worked for many years in the specialist antique Persian carpet trade, followed by an Arts degree as a mature student, his particular fields of interest are carpets, furniture and militaria.

Catherine Hockley ASOFAA

Catherine joined the company in 2006 with a degree in Fine Arts Valuation. Having a background in the Arts publication business and previously employed by Christies, London, Catherine advises on all aspects of the auction process and assists in the valuation of Fine Art and Jewellery.

Nick Jarrett FRICS - Auctioneer/Valuer

With a career spanning over 30 years in the auction industry, Nick is a well known and respected professionally qualified Auctioneer and Valuer who, jointly with Andrew Smith, conducts all our auction sales. Nick is also involved in day-to-day valuations and has made our monthly ‘free’ valuation days, held at our Winchester city centre premises, a notable success, with many valuable items coming to light.

Adam Gough - Saleroom Manager

Having joined us in 2008 as a porter, Adam’s capabilities with the entire auction process soon became apparent. He was promoted to Saleroom Manager in 2011 and now has the added responsibility of a second saleroom to nurture. Adam is assisted by our two full time porters and during viewing and sale days, heads a team of over ten part-time porters.

Chris Corrall - Office Manager

Joining us after a 25 year career in the banking industry, Chris brings with her an in-depth knowledge of current financial practices as well as a highly honed ability to efficiently deal with the multitude of daily enquiries we receive. As the first point of call, Chris ensures the smooth running of the administrative process, in addition to running the busy valuations and collections diary. Chris mixes a ‘wicked’ g & t and has been know to ‘disappear’ on ridiculous camping excursions to the West Country in the depths of winter!

Annie Archer - Textiles/Costume

With over 20 years experience in the auction industry, Annie brings a wealth of knowledge and has built up our textiles and costume section of our Fine Art sales to generate notable results. She also assists in the layout and administration of our sales.

James Hammond – Asian Works of Art

Heading the Asian Arts department, James joined our existing team in March 2016 having held the position of has Formerly Head of Asian Art at Bonhams, Knightsbridge, James joined our existing team in march 2016 as a full time specialist in the Asian Arts field, where he will catalogue a wide variety of ceramics and works of art. In addition James will assist with valuation days across Southern England.

Andrew Wilson / Sean Bennett / David Woodman - The Porters

With us since 2007, Andrew was joined by Sean in 2013 and more recently, by David and are our full time porters. They are jointly responsible for keeping track of and storing all the items that are consigned for auction with us (currently over 1,200 lots per month). Our porters duties also include organizing the collection of goods and laying out of our sales in addition to photography, condition reports and front of house duties during viewing times. They are assisted at peak times by our team of regular part-time porters.

Natalie Whetstone

Heading our Finance department, Natalie keeps track of our comprehensive financial requirements and ensures we are both paid and that we pay our clients within the allotted time. All financial enquiries should be directed to Natalie.

Specialist Valuers

In addition to our full time staff, we have a team of highly skilled specialist consultants with considerable experience in the antiques/auction trade, who work closely with and compliment our team. These consultants assist the valuation and cataloguing of jewellery and silver, books, watches and oriental art etc. Our specialist valuers have correctly identified or 'discovered' many valuable items over the years with record prices being achieved in many cases.
